Roberta Grace Cotruffo, LMT – was originally a secretary inher native country of Brazil but came to the United States in 2003 topursue a career in Massage Therapy. She specializes in Spa massage modalities such as HotStone, Swedish and Deep Tissue for relaxation and is best known forwhat we have coined her “voodoo” massage. This is the massage thattotally relaxes the client as though they under a spell and they areput right to sleep. Roberta has received her certifications in “Thai onthe Table at the Vedic Conservatory with Michael Buck andShiatsu-Swedish Integration with Bob Lunior. Martha A. Sanchez- is a native of Cuba but moved to the UnitedStates in 1988. She earned her Esthetician license in 2000 for Facialsand Waxing and has worked as Lead Esthetician in some of the finestsalons, spas and Dermatologist offices in the South Florida area suchas the Ritz Carlton, Conrad Hotels, Ugo di Roma and Arthur Colsky, MD,PhD.. Martha is certified in Microdermabrasion, Endermology, chemicalpeels and Lift 6. She has studied aromatherapy and the Bach FlowerEssences. Katia Yachmann, LMT-is a Native of Brazil but has lived in theSouth Florida area for 16 years. She attended the National School ofTechnology which is now known as the Everest Institute. She has beenpracticing massage for six years and specializes in Asian stylemodalities. Katia is certified in Myofascial Release, Bamboo Massageand earned her Thai Massage certification with the renowned Thaimassage Master, Jongrak Intatah. She also trained one- on –one learningthe oriental style of massage, cupping and Tuina with Master Choi fromChina. I have 2 wonderful dogs that I love very much. The oldest is my black Labrador retriever, Allie. She is 18 years old and I am convinced she made it to such an old age because I do a lot of preventative care like daily teeth brushing. I have been brushing her teeth for many years now and luckily, she has good genes. I never had to perform dentistry on her. However, my 5-year old Rottie rescue, Roxy, is not as lucky. Even though she gets her teeth brushed daily, she must have lousy genes, because she still builds up some plaque and tartar. Performing a proper dentistry requires anesthesia and I do not want to put her under if I do not have to. No matter how many precautions are taken, anesthesia still poses a risk. This is why I am so excited about PetzLife oral care products. I love the fact that these products are all natural. They are so easy to use. Every night, (because my dogs are used to me brushing their teeth) I apply some gel on the toothbrush and brush the gel directly onto the teeth. In the morning, I take a piece of gauze and wipe the plaque and tartar right off. Wow! After using the product for just 1 week, I saw results.

Note: For patients that are not used to brushing, I suggest that you rub the gel liberally onto the teeth in the evening before bedtime, then wipe with gauze in the morning. After 1 week of doing this every night, you too should see a difference.

A resolution can be very overwhelming and scary intention to commit to. People write them down with the purest of intentions at heart and whole-heartedly want success. How come most resolutions don’t stick? More often than not, when our resolutions fail, we end up with a New Year’s depression. How can we alleviate these overwhelming resolutions?

Be patient with yourself. You know yourself better than anyone. Don’t just write down something that you think other people want to hear – like going to a gym. A gym is a good place, but it’s not necessarily the best place for you. Find out what makes you tick and do it.
Do you like outdoors activities? Maybe skiing (cross-country or downhill), snowshoeing, ice skating, rollerblading, skate boarding, running, walking…there are several activities that you could do that pumps you up without resorting to a gym. Bike riding is a great activity too.
Some people even walk the mall. Some malls have ice skating rinks too. There are malls that have three floors. That makes it better to walk the mall – one floor at a time.
Do you like to dance? Maybe dance classes are more your style to get your body moving.
The bottom line is, know what you want to do and be patient with yourself. Set realistic intentions based on your own guidelines and not someone else’s.
When you feel overwhelmed, that is also a good indicator that you are not living one day at a time. You are looking too far into the future.

We’ve all written them out on January 1st. What are resolutions anyway? They are mere declarations, affirmations, decisions and promises that we make to ourselves in hopes to make something better. We hope to resolve some conflict or imbalance in our lives.
Faith is such a big word. It encompasses trust in something greater than what we know and feel. It isn’t tangible in any sense. How do we go from knowing and believing to attaining faith and letting go?

Why have so many people turned to material possessions as a sort of security and comfort? People think that life is good when they acquire more money and the more “stuff.” But is it really?

The more material they acquire, the emptier their lives are. They have a feeling that there is a void in their life and that they need to fill it. They see what society gives them and they fill it with the things they only see.

Why not declare a new year by announcing you want more faith? Material gain doesn’t fulfill the void that faith can fill.Christmas is a time of love and spiritual giving and fulfillment. It has little to do with acquiring material possessions like video games, jewelry, money, and gift cards.

January 1st is a time of reflecting upon what has worked and what has been positive in our lives. What do we keep and what do we discard? I am not just talking about “stuff,” I am also referring to the thoughts that manifest in our consciousness and awareness. What and/or who is of importance to us and do they work in our ever-so changing lifestyle?

Faith can be reached through your own interpretation of spirituality. Without a little spirituality, we tread through life feeling unfulfilled and insecure.
With little random acts of faith, more of the resolutions you desire will come to fruition.

Your Brain on Drugs

I was reading an article in Neuropsychobiology today (yes, I know, just a little light reading). The article was discussing the effects of drug and alcohol abuse on the brain. The research had several interesting findings. One observation was that there was a volume reduction of the brain with alcohol abuse. In other words, drinking may make your dumber (probably something most of us already knew).

The good news is that the article went on to say that withabstinence you can have volume restoration. So in other words, withrecovery you can get your brains back! I remember when I was a new inrecovery. The old-timers would quip that it took about two years toget your brains out of hock. So that’s what they must have beentalking about.

The article also talked about MDMA (ecstasy) user’s brain changes. It stated that there was a “reduction in cortical grey matter inmultiple brain regions, which may translate into white matterabnormities characterized by “pruning” of the serotoninergic neurons.” This means when you use ecstasy you damage or prune back the neuronswhich make serotonin, a hormone associated with happiness. Because ofthis you will probably feel depressed when you stop using ecstasy andit may take some time for your brain to recover. They found similar alterations in the brain of cocaine users.

Thedifference is that with coke use you have neurotoxicity to dopamineneurons. Dopamine is a hormone associated with pleasure. Just like serotonina loss of this hormone can make you feel depressed. And, because theneurons are damaged, it can take some time for you to feel naturallyhappy again.

So what does this all have to do with relationships? Many peoplehave asked me about getting into a relationship early in recovery. This article shows that while using our brain is physically andchemically changed, and that restoration does occur with recovery andabstinence, but it takes time.

Therefore, that is why it is sostrongly recommended to stay out of a relationship early in recovery. It gives you time to get back to your right mind. Welcome to 2010, the year of love. Why do I say that? According to the 2010 Chinese horoscope and Chinese lunar calendar, 2010 coincides with February 14th – St. Valentine’s Day. That makes love the prevailing emotion for the year. How exciting!!in love 2With some much more love in the air, 2010 should be electrifying. Dear Dawn,

I am 23 years old and it only took 7 years of using for my disease to bring me to my knees. However, I have been in recovery now for a little over a year. This is my first time of abstinence and my first time in a program. I have been in a relationship with the man I love for 4 years. He recently asked me to marry him! So of course I said yes but here is my problem. In active addiction, I was a dancer and did many horrible things. My fourth step is full of shame and guilt. I have just finished my fifth step but sex still is a very uncomfortable area for me. I went from being a highly sexual person to withdrawing from anything sexual. I feel like sex is wrong. I know over time I can work through this but not exactly how to work through my shame and guilt while being in a relationship. This is just not fair to him. I want to be able to have sex and feel good about it. Help! A guilt-filled addict.

Dear Guilt-filled Addict,

Oh sweet child, I want to thank you so much for writing. Many women struggle with this issue in silence. The fear and shame keep many from asking questions, so thank you for being so brave!

Almost every woman I have met in recovery has a past that includes sexual shame and guilt. I am so happy that you said you were working the steps. What the steps will do is allow you to come to terms with this. As you continue to work the steps, you will eventually release all that old pain and the guilt and shame will slip away. steps

This phenomenon is very much like the movement of a pendulum. In our addict we are at one end of the spectrum, with extreme sexual behavior. When we get into recovery, all of a sudden we withdraw as you stated, sometimes to the point of complete abstinence. We go from one end of the spectrum to the other end. You may even find yourself going back and forth a bit, until you finally settle down to a place where you feel comfortable with yourself, your past and your sexuality. So, how do you deal with your fiancé in the meantime? Talk to him (without any gory details) and explain you need this time. If he truly loves you he will understand and give you time. If he doesn’t want to give you time, than it indicates he is probably too young or to selfish to be a husband right now.

Just do me two favors: don’t get married until you finish all your steps, and don’t run off confessing anything until you have talked with your sponsor. You have a long and wonderful life ahead of you. I can assure you that you have many talents and qualities that are untapped right now. I commend you are taking the beginning steps to a life beyond your wildest dreams. Well done little one!

Hello Dawn,

My situation is no different from a lot of women in recovery. I’ve been clean for 10 years, come tomorrow it will be 11 years through God’s grace and mercy and of course these rooms and the steps. I’ve really just now realized that I’ve fallen deeper in love with my husband of 7 years! And that may sound a bit crazy, however, if you knew me you’d know that I still have major trust issues as well as major love issue’s. I was never really loved as a child and I was used and abused in a very long relationship (22 years) while I was using. So, when I met and married my husband, I loved him, however I really fell in love with him during the last three years we’ve been married. I now think that I didn’t trust myself enough to really let go and fall in love with him because I was afraid if I did, he’d hurt me! Does that sound strange or crazy to you?

I just adore this letter! What a wonderful thing to write about – being in love with your husband. You ask me if it’s strange or crazy that you have grown to love him? My answer is no. In fact, I have a totally different word for it…are you ready? Your marriage is healthy! Growing to love someone and loving them more and more as the time goes on is the model of health.in love

What’s unhealthy is expecting instant intimacy, or love at first sight. As I explained earlier in another blog, love at first sight is simply a hormone induced haze. It will eventually wear off. Hopefully by the time the trance wears off you have gotten to know each other and developed true love.

You stated you had major issue’s that may have prevented you from falling in love earlier. This makes perfect sense. Many people in recovery have intimacy issues. Many of us build a wall around our hearts for protection. Slowly, as your trust grew, you were able to dismantle your wall, brick by brick, until you were finally able to feel the love. Congratulations! I am very happy for you. You are very fortunate, and are a shining example for all of us to follow.
